Airheads Hot Chocolate Mugs

Christmas crafting is the funnest…I think it’s the time of year when I see most of my friends actually taking the time to make things.  And what’s even more fun than crafting is crafting with candy!  Making gingerbread houses, yes, but have you ever thought beyond that?  How about Airheads hot chocolate mugs?

I thought it would be super fun for my kids and I to make these cute little hot chocolate mugs out of Airheads.  Airheads are a great crafting candy, and one I think is not always thought of first.  But it should be because it’s so flexible and easy to use!  You can microwave them for 3-5 seconds to make them a little more pliable but not more than that because they become really melty and turn super hard.  Put them on a bit of wax paper so it doesn’t stick to the surface.

I got myself a box of Airheads in all the various flavors and ended up using white mystery, cherry, orange, and watermelon.  I used scissors and toothpicks for this cute little project.

To make the mug:

First you take one full white mystery bar and wrap it around in a circle.  Fuse the ends together by overlapping them and pressing together.  Your body heat will help melt it together.  Then take a small square cut from another bar and bend the corners up.  Slip it into the bottom of the little cylinder you made and press the edges into it, forming a bottom.  Cut a strip from the remaining white mystery bar and curl it around the side to make a handle.

To make the “hot chocolate”:

Take one orange Airhead and simple roll it up into itself to make a cute little swirly insert.  Flatten the bottom out and then place it inside the mug.  Another option here is to melt a few chocolate chips and add a layer of chocolate to the top of the orange Airheads to give it a real authentic hot chocolate look.  I liked the look of both.

To make a holly berry:

Cut two small rectangles from a watermelon Airheads.  Cut the corners off the rectangle and you can cut small triangles out of the sides or just use a toothpick to push the sides inward.  Use the toothpick to make ‘leaf veins’ and make the corners more rounded (use your hands also.)  Roll three berries from a cherry Airheads.  Stick them together and lay them on the edge of the mug.

To make a candy cane:

Cut one strip from a white mystery and one strip from a cherry.  Lie them on top of each other and then start twisting them together, smoothing as you go.  Bend it into a candy cane shape.

Serve them to your kids and enjoy!  These were so fun and my kids were so excited about this project.  Airheads are such a fun candy to use for crafting.  They are so yummy too–long lasting flavor, chewy, tangy, sweet, and flavorful.  Also doesn’t hurt that they are gluten and peanut free!
