Pink and Gold Girls Bedroom

I just finished up a new project–decorating a pink and gold girls bedroom. It was for my friends’ daughter. She had been having problems staying in her bed all night, usually ending up sleeping in her parent’s room. They made a deal with her that if they gave her her own room and decorated it the way she wanted, then she would have to stay in her bed all night. That way she would feel more ownership of her bedroom and see it as a sanctuary. She was super excited to start decorating it and found some pictures of rooms she liked. She knew she wanted pink and gold for the color scheme. We brainstormed for a little bit and came up with some ideas that totally fit her personality–she is super sweet and kind, very feminine and sensitive. Here is her room before we started–just plain and empty with gray walls. No one lived in this room previously and it was just kind of a storage space. Here is the after! I love how it turned out–so pretty and calming. (Get ready for a lot of pictures!)

The first thing we did was to paint the walls pink. We found a couple of pillows we liked at Hobby Lobby in pink and gold to help us pick the right paint color. It’s always best to start with an inspiration piece. We used FrogTape® to tape off the baseboards and ceiling and windows. Using good quality painter’s tape like Frog Tape is the best way to get clean, crisp lines because of their patented PaintBlock® Technology which forms a micro-barrier sealing the edges of the tape. It makes it a lot easier to paint too because you don’t have to worry so much about being super careful. The key to clean lines is to 1) make sure the tape is solidly adhered to the surface before painting–you can always press it down harder with a putty knife or something and 2) pull the tape off while the paint is still wet. Latex paint is rubbery so if you wait until it’s dry you could end up pulling off an entire chunk of paint. If it is dry when you pull it off make sure to cut through the paint with a razor blade first. It seems counter-intuitive to pull the tape off before the paint has dried because you want to make sure you don’t need another coat and it can be hard to tell when the paint is wet. I rolled the paint while my friend Trish cut in close to the tape with a smaller brush and we both did two coats and that was enough to get complete coverage. It also depends on the quality of paint you use. From now on I am buying higher quality paint because the time it saves me on painting is worth it. Look how nice it looks! After we painted, we moved in the furniture and started getting everything else we needed for the space. Since we were on a time crunch, we ordered the side desk from Amazon (2-day shipping is the bomb!), found a headboard in great shape for $50 on Craigslist, and bought everything else from the store. Trish’s daughter absolutely loves her new bedroom! It’s so much fun for me to decorate people’s homes, and it’s even more fun to do kids bedrooms. It’s so rewarding to see how much they love it and how they feel a new kind of ownership to their space. And as a bonus, she has slept the entire night in her room every night since we finished it!
