Valentine’s Awesome Quilted Artwork
I love, love, love doing quilted artwork.
I would do it all day if I had time. I would just sit there, piecing together small designs and then quilting it. And thinking of new designs and new things to do. It’s just freaking fun.
And since I got my new Silhouette (did I mention that I got one? Hooray!) I have only tried freezer paper stenciling. It’s such an easy and fun craft. Addicting, too. So I decided to try my hand at a little ‘freezer-paper-stencil-then-quilted-artwork.’ Catchy name, no?
Want to do it yourself? Well, I didn’t make a step-by-step tutorial since I did two things:

So first, you cut out your stencil on freezer paper. Then you iron on your stencil (shiny side down) to the fabric. Remember your stencil requires that you use the negative space of your image. Next you use fabric paint and paint your stencil area and let it dry for awhile. Iron it to seal the paint. Then you put in a little batting under the fabric and some extra fabric on the bottom (I just used muslin for both sides here.) I then free-motion quilted the rectangle, and avoided quilting over the painted area. I actually sewed around the people and they puffed out, it was a cool effect. Finally I put the quilted fabric in a frame. Done!
I think I’m going to call this AQUA (Awesome Quilted Artwork.)

Quilted artwork is so versatile.
(Not to mention a great way to practice free-motion quilting if you’re new to it.)
You can piece together fabric or do one simple quilted fabric, like above. I made this one for my little boy’s room. That’s a thrifted $1 frame I spray painted white and removed the glass, a craft store wooden ‘W’ that I painted and distressed and used E6000 to glue to the fabric. And best of all, it’s the exact same pattern that his quilt will be, if I ever finish it!
Not too shabby, eh?
Now you’re going to want to quilt everything in sight! Do it, I say!
