Kids Homework Station

My son started Kindergarten this year.  Some people get teary about this big step but I was super excited.  My son is very social and full of energy and I knew that kindergarten would be the greatest thing ever for him.  And so far, it totally is.  He absolutely loves everything about it.

But he has homework now.  Every night!  I was kind of surprised…surprised but not annoyed.  I know that homework and practice helps with learning.  He has to practice writing his name and some simple math and then 20 minutes of reading.  However I know myself–being somewhat unorganized in my crazy, chaotic world—I was bound to lose things and forget important dates.  Both Will and I needed a homework station.

When Scotch Expressions Tape sent me oodles of their delicious tapes to play with, I knew the perfect thing for it was to decorate and personalize a little area just for him to do homework.

It is really so simple to put something like this together in just an afternoon.  I purchased several old frames at a thrift store, a cork roll from Hobby Lobby, and everything else I had on hand.  But for the tapes, you’ll want to get the Scotch Expressions Tapes –they have so many kinds and they are super cute!  I got masking tape, washi tape, packing tape, and Magic tape…all in fun colors and patterns.  And Scotch Expressions Tapes are available in these four forms in over 100 colors and patterns! (You can buy them at any office superstore or online.)

I really do love these tapes.  And they were so easy to craft with–I could tape everything.  (Even the packing tape is so cute–wouldn’t that be fun to tape up a package with that?)

First I took out the hideous old pictures that were in the thrift store frames.  Except I kept the cardboard that was in the back of the frames because I used them to glue the cork to.

Then, using the mitered corner as a guide, I started taping the frame diagonally, lining up each tape next to the last one in a pattern.  I wrapped the tape around the back.

When I got to the corner, I just continued taping on the diagonal instead of turning the corner, I think this turned out better.

And when I was all done, I used spray adhesive to glue the cork to the cardboard and then set the whole thing into the frame like the picture used to be.  Easy!  The other frames I kinda played around with designs.  One of the frames is a chalkboard instead of cork so Will can check off what he’s done.

And voila!

I also got some empty tin cans and a tray I thrifted and added some tape to tie everything together.  The cans hold fun and colorful supplies like markers, pens, scissors, etc.  The tray is for when he’s done his homework, he can put it in there so I know he’s all done!

I had a great time putting together this kids homework station and I honestly think Scotch Brand tape is some of my most favorite crafting supplies!
