Headboard Makeover: Black to Aqua

Sharing is caring!

Last day to enter the Loxly Hollow Nursery art giveaway!!

*********

I woke up one morning with the hankering to PAINT.  So I decided on a project that wouldn’t take too much time, since it was still 100+ degrees outside.

Meet my headboard.

We found this wicker (if wicker is the right term here) baby sitting outside by the dumpster of my brother’s neighbor’s house.  Right when we were first married and had no headboard and no money.  Five years later, we have a headboard and still no money, but that’s a different story.

I, in my inexperienced decorating wisdom, decided to spray paint it black.  I had painted out bedroom wall RED, a deep deep crimson.  Nothing says hunkapassionateluvin’ like a bright red wall in the bedroom.  Actually I just had this obsession with red and black back then, and everything I bought was red, black, or white.  Still dealing with those consequences.

I bought 2 cans of Krylon Catalina Mist as well as three cans of white primer.   I wiped the dust off my baby and went to work.  It took several trips to the store and several days to complete (because I had to keep going back to the store, but if I’d had everything it would have taken probably a day or two.)  And yes that is a water bottle on the nightstand, you know, just to prove that someone actually lives in this room.

I also bought a Black and Decker Mouse sander.  Yay!  Best. Investment. Ever.  What would have taken me a half hour to hour in the hot heat to distress, took me minutes with the sander.  It cost $35.  If you don’t have one, GET ONE immediately, if you plan on doing any sort of furniture refinishing.  (And yes, if you do some major furniture refinishing you probably already have an awesome fancy sander, but don’t knock the palm sanders.)

I love the color. I was nervous I wouldn’t, since it seemed a bit more seafoam green than aqua, but I really ended up loving it. I didn’t want the bright blue aqua that Krylon (bright blue ocean, I think it’s called?) also has. I wish they would hurry up and come out with every single spectrum color of spray paint.

Now I just have to refinish pretty much every single other piece of furniture in my bedroom.  I’m also still working on the bedding situation.  I’m determined to get beautiful white sheets for Christmas this year (any recommendations?) and I can’t decide if I should try and quilt that Pottery Barn Duvet cover.  I really love it, but the problem with duvet covers is that they are always shifting around and this one gets extremely wrinkly all the time.  If it was quilted, both problems would be solved.  Hmm….

I also desperately need to get some wall art going on above the bed, but I have a feeling I won’t get to that before we move next year.  Maybe I’ll just make some stuff but won’t hang it up.  Any suggestions on the lamps?  They are truly hideous right now.  I’m really just open to any bedroom decoration suggestions.

  1. What agreat transformation!
If you have it, please share a link for the duvet cover 😉
For the lamps: I would recomend some really simple, straigt drum shades. And you could spraypaint the bases the same aqua…

      1. Thanks for the link. Now I understand the whole sheets and cover thing (we have a different “system” for bedding here in Germany)… Unfortunately now that I do I still have no helpful insight on the quilting question…
White sheets would look awesome though!

  2. When I saw the black headboard I though “That’s nice.” It is so much more than nice now. Great job. Thank you for sharing your project. I think you definitely need taller lamps, maybe a stick type with a simple shade. Black to match your night stands or match the hardware on them.

  3. I love your headboard! Great job, it ties so well with your duvet cover. I agree with the above suggestion for drum shades. You could do the whole ruffle burlap thingy that I’ve seen around a lot. Something like this, http://mama-says-sew.blogspot.com/2011/02/ruffled-burlap-lamp-tutorial.html
As for decor above the bed, your pillow made me think of this idea, used with toilet paper rolls, cut up. http://justagirlblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/tp1.jpg It’s just the picture, not the link. Anyways, good luck with everything!

I know, I’m obsessed with aqua. Pretty much every room in my house has it now. 🙂

  4. What a change! It looks fantastic. The distressing is just perfect and the touch of aqua accessories on the night stand ties it all together. Great job! ~Pepper
