Walmart is Empowering Women Together

Sharing is caring!

I’m all for Women Empowerment.  Because A) I’m a woman, and B) women work SO hard everyday and many of us feel under appreciated for the things we do.  I’m not going to go into a whole feminist thing here because I don’t consider myself a feminist.  But I do feel that women deserve equal treatment as men and equal pay for the same jobs.

So I was excited when I heard about a new campaign launched by Walmart called Empowering Women Together.  It’s actually a website that gives shoppers the opportunity to buy cool stuff that also supports women-owned businesses around the world!  And being a Women-owned business myself, that is something I want to get behind.

By buying things on this website, you can empower the women behind the products to improve their lives and the lives of their families and communities.    In the past, Walmart has been criticized for being the Big Box company that puts Mom and Pop shops out of business…but this their way of using their massive company to help people, to promote small businesses…(women owned too!)  Empowering Women Together is an element of Walmart’s Global Women’s Economic 5-year commitment to source $20 billion from women-owned businesses.

So what kinds of things will be on the Empowering Women Together site?  At the launch, they will offer more than 200 items from 19 businesses in nine countries.  You can buy jewelry from Peru, home decor items from Rwanda, ipad cases from Nepal, and much more.  And that’s only the beginning.

I encourage you to follow the launch of this website (stay in touch by following on Facebook or Twitter or Pinterest) and then shopping there to support women across the globe!

  1. Hi Heidi! I think feminism must have a bad connotation for you, because your goals of equality in pay and treatment are the definition of feminism. 🙂

WalMart has a bad connotation for me, in the ways to which you’ve alluded, so I’m glad to hear that they are making what seems to be a real and significant effort to provide opportunities for female business owners. Thanks much for sharing this information.

  2. Beth–your comment made me laugh because I was thinking the exact same thing! Equal treatment and equal pay for women is the very definition of feminism!

A big thanks to Heidi for sharing the great things Wal-Mart is doing for women entrepreneurs.

  3. Yeah, the very definition of feminism is political, economic and social equality between the sexes. By that definition, EVERYONE should be a feminist, including men. 🙂 I am glad to see that Walmart is helping to provide these opportunities. I am impressed.

  4. YAY! for Walmart finally stepping up to the plate for women! we sure do need more companies to follow in their footsteps!

  5. Hmmmm…off to investigate some more. Thanks Heidi. Might have to change my opinion of Walmart. 🙂
