My Career as a Travel Agent for Expedia Cruises
It’s been awhile since I’ve posted on here. My entire life has shifted over the last couple years and DIY and home decorating has taken a major back seat as I started a new career. In June of 2023, I became a travel agent for Expedia Cruises, which is a subsidiary of Expedia and we have a small store front about a mile from my home. It has been a completely different type of work that has been amazing. It’s been hard but rewarding and I love all the friends I’ve met whether they are other agents or clients.
The best part is that I have been able to expand my traveling, and have tried some new things I otherwise probably wouldn’t have done. Since I have this website, I want to start to share some of my experiences. At this point in my life, I don’t travel quite enough to be an official travel blogger, but I can have a nice little category on here with some helpful tips. Some people are surprised when I tell them I’m a travel agent for Expedia Cruises, since they didn’t even know they still existed. Let me just tell you, being a travel agent is much harder than it seems! There is just SO MUCH to learn. And I have learned SO MUCH!
I’ve wanted to travel more so becoming a travel agent for Expedia Cruises has come with some great deals and discounts that I’ve tried to take advantage of. I have a personal goal of cruising on all the major cruise lines and so far I’ve knocked three off my list (I never cruised until last year). We were a little anxious leaving our kiddos at home with babysitters, but it was a game changer and such a fun trip to take with just your spouse! Now we try to get away a couple times a year.
Why should I use a travel agent?
Using a travel agent can be so helpful, especially with booking cruises, so you don’t have to call the cruise line which is basically required if you want to book anything more than up to four people in a cabin. Travel agents for Expedia Cruises have a wealth of resources at their fingertips so even if I haven’t been to a specific destination, I can consult with other agents who have and can still come up with an amazing itinerary for you. Since I work for Expedia, we have access to all the cheapest rates that you find on Expedia.com (or their other sites like hotels.com, travelocity, etc). We also have this thing called “Group Space” which doesn’t mean you have to have a group, you just get the lower rates and extra perks of being in group. Sometimes that means a refundable deposit, or on board ship credit (cruises).
We also create a nice little “Bon Voyage” package before you go which has some travel documents, luggage tags, lanyards, brochures, etc. We use this super helpful app which your entire trip on it that includes any tickets to tours or excursions right on there. The best part though, is that if you have any problem, particularly while traveling, you can just call or text me and I will sort it out so you don’t have to spend hours on the phone with someone you may or may not understand.
Does it cost anything to use a travel agent?
Nope! The majority of trips I book for free since I get paid from the vendors. The commission is built into the price you’re already paying so you’re essentially not utilizing a service you paid for if you book yourself. Occasionally we will charge a small service fee if we build a whole custom itinerary or sometimes for flights (it’s trickier for us to make commission on flights) but most of the time you don’t pay anything extra.
Can I use your services?
I’m currently accepting new clients so if you’re interested in booking a trip (whether its a cruise or something else) just shoot me an email at hferguson@expediacruises.com.
I will be occasionally writing posts about my trips I go on so you can learn more about that destination or property if it’s somewhere you want to go. I am also just happy to answer any questions. I love talking travel so don’t be shy!
Are you done with diy and home decor?
No, I don’t think I will ever be “done” with it. I definitely did less while I was learning this new trade. I’ve also had much less free time because along with this job and being a mother of five, I also hired a health and fitness coach to help me with my health goals so that takes some time as well. However I do want to start posting a bit more, even if they aren’t always big reveals or full makeovers or whatever. Due to my teenagers crazy summer camps schedule, we won’t be traveling much during the summer so hopefully I will have time for home projects.
Wow, what a career shift! Becoming a travel agent sounds super exciting. I can only imagine all the amazing experiences you’ve had. It’s great that you’re sharing your journey. Have you found any hidden gems among the cruise lines you’ve tried? And how do you handle all that learning? 😜
Thanks! I’ve only tried three cruise lines so far but I’ll write about each of them!
